Install Tmux on ubuntu 14.04 computer

tmux is a terminal multiplexer

What is a terminal multiplexer? It lets you switch easily between several programs in one terminal, detach them (they keep running in the background) and reattach them to a different terminal. And do a lot more. See the manual.

Here is my note that talking about Tmux installation step by step on my Ubuntu 14.04 computer (Lenovo Idea Pad 300) :

  • Install  http://libevent.org on ubuntu 14.04
    • sudo apt-get install libevent-dev
  • Install  http://invisible-island.net/ncurses/ on ubuntu 14.04
    • sudo apt-get install libncurses-dev
  • Clone and Build Tmux
    • $ git clone https://github.com/tmux/tmux.git
      $ cd tmux
      $ sh autogen.sh
      $ ./configure && make

Now you can just using this steps below for easier Tmux installation

Ubuntu/Debian

There is a Ubuntu package so, sudo apt-get install tmux will work, but the installed package is 1.7 and we really want 1.8. To get 1.8, do the following (thanks to this article):

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pi-rho/dev
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install tmux
